Leyla Cabugos writes about being an AgBioData Champion and the creation of a new Ag Database Finder Tool

By Leyla Cabugos

In case you missed it, there is a new tool on the AgBioData website (location indicated by the red arrow in the above image) to guide authors in selecting a community database that will help them share data in the most FAIR way.  The development and dissemination of this tool advances the Fair Scientific Literature Working Group’s charge to “identify sets of existing or desired tools to increase literature curation throughput and accuracy”.

As an AgBioData Champion, I led a highly collaborative effort to prepare a paper recently released in microPublication Biology to introduce the AgBioDatabase Finder tool to our community of prospective users. I was pleased to be able to publish in microPublication Biology because gaining direct experience as a corresponding author with this journal will enhance my ability to help the researchers I support as a librarian understand their options for publishing small or auxiliary research outputs.

The need for a tool like this was suggested by a profiling exercise the Working Group conducted, through which we determined that authors, journal editors, and librarians alike need assistance identifying the most suitable specialized database for data deposition (and discovery). Its relevance was affirmed by the excitement expressed within my community of agriculture librarians, to whom I recently announced the tool.

I am grateful to our Working Group members for their generous collaboration, to microPublication Biology’s reviewer and editorial staff, who processed our submission in just over a month while offering constructive feedback, and for AgBioData’s support for my focused work on this project.
